Measure Your TV Size With These 3 Easy Steps

If you’re ever wondered how a modern television’s size is measured, you’re in the right place. Today, we intend to teach you how TV sizes are measured and what implications knowing a TV’s size can have.

How to Measure Your TV

How to Measure Your TV

You might have observed that most TVs come in sizes like 40 inches, 52 inches, and even 100 inches! So how exactly are these TVs measured? Let’s learn how you can measure your display with these few easy steps. Get a measuring tape and a helper to ensure accuracy.

STEP 1: Measure your TV screen diagonally

Hold your measuring tape to the bottom left corner of your TV. Now drag your tape to the top right corner and measure the distance between the two points.

Make sure that you’re taking your readings from the same side of the tape and that it’s not getting twisted anywhere. Also, make sure you’re taking the reading in either inches or centimeters.

The length that you’ve found is the standard size of your TV. This is the size that TVs are mostly advertised with. Even the examples we saw earlier are the size of the TV measured diagonally.

Also, you want to make sure that you’re measuring the size from the screen and not from the TV’s frame.

STEP 2: Measure the TV’s length and breadth

Measure the TV's length and breadth

For this step, measure the length of the vertical side of the TV screen using your tape. Then, measure the length of the horizontal side of the TV screen

Also, using the same method, find out the measurements including the TV’s frame.

You’ll find out that the TV’s actual dimensions are different from the size that is commonly used. For example, for a 16:9 aspect ratio 40-inch flat TV, the breadth is 35.5 inches and the length is 20 inches.

Ensure that the tape is taut for accurate measurements.

STEP 3: Measure the width of your TV

Measure how broad your TV is using the tape. It can be a little tricky if your TV is a little bulged in the middle. However, you can use a ruler as an extension of the bulged area and then use a measuring tape to measure the length from the surface of the TV to the other end.

Why Knowing Your TV Size Is Important

If you own a TV or are about to buy one, knowing your TV size could help you with a bunch of things. Ascertaining your TV size will help you in planning the position of the TV and will allow you to get the optimum experience out it.

The Best Location

The Best TV Location

If you know the size of your TV, it will be easier for you to find the best spot for it. May it be the living room or the bedroom, a well-placed TV can give you an amazing viewing experience. It will also ensure better neck posture while you spend some leisure time surfing through your favorite content. It will also help you find out the best viewing angle and get the best out of your TV.

The Best Setup

With TVs becoming slimmer every day, it opens up a lot of options in the way you want to orient your TV. Your TV size will help you determine what kind of setup you can actually go for and even compare their viabilities. If you’re planning to have your TV placed on a desk or a cabinet, knowing its size will allow you to get better-suited furniture for that purpose.

Wall-mounted TVs have become popular for the elegant and simplistic look they provide. If you’re looking to mount your TV on a wall, its dimensions will help you find the best spot to place your TV. A built-in cubby in your wall is also a great place to mount your TV and also provides a sleek look to your room. Knowing the measurements of the cubby and the TV will enable you to place the TV in a position where it will also be visually appealing.

Viewing Angle and Distance

Every TV has a different size and uses a different technology. These factors affect the distance and angle at which you’ll get the best experience out of your big display. There is debate as to what distance is optimal for a viewer to watch TV from. Some believe that the appropriate distance is where the TV occupies 40⁰ of your complete viewing range. There have also been claims that the optimal distance to watch TV should be around 1.5 to 2.5 times the size of your TV. According to that, if your TV size is 40 inches, the best range to view it from is from 60 to 100 inches away. The best distance is also mentioned in the product manual these days.

Viewing angle is also an important aspect of a TV setup. The appropriate viewing angle can help you have a better experience and ensure better posture. Some TVs tend to give degraded or differently colored images when viewed from wider angles. OLED TVs are known to provide a greater viewing angle without degrading the picture.

Now that we’ve discussed the way your TV size can have various implications, let’s answer another question.

What is the best size for a TV?

That again depends upon the points mentioned above. Some people believe that the bigger it is, the better. But the distance that your room provides, the viewing angles available, the furniture available, the kind of setup you want to go with are some things you should factor in when choosing your TV size. If you plan to view it from a closer distance, you might want to invest in a smaller TV that gives better picture quality and resolution. If you plan to view it from far away, you could invest in a bigger TV that won’t compromise the picture quality with distance.  The cost of the TV is also, obviously, an important factor.

In the end, it’s completely up to you to customize your experience with the TV and get the most out of it in your atmosphere!
